The Primordial Creations
Part II
The 'Arsh (the Throne)
"And He (Allah), it is Who, has created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His Throne was on the water, that He might try you, which of you is the best in deed, but if you were to say to them: "You shall indeed be raised up after death", those who disbelieve would be sure to say, "This is nothing but obvious magic." [Hud 11:7]
Creation of the 'Arsh (Throne):
Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As narrated that the first thing that AllahSWT created was His Throne, and it was over the water. Then He wrote everything about His creation (the Decrees) and preserved everything in the "Mother of the Book", the Lawh-al-Mahfuz, and kept it in His Presence. [Sahih Muslim 2653b, Book 46, Hadith 27]
So, 'Arsh (Throne) is the first and the foremost thing that AllahSWT created. It is the greatest of all created things. The size of the Throne is beyond the grasp of imagination.
It is the Seat of His Will and Decree, the Seat of Command, and the Seat of Knowledge about His creations. It is the Seat of Allah's Power and Majesty:
"He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of authority). He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be. And Allah is all Seer of what you do." [Al Hadid 57:4]
The Jannatul Firdaws is directly below the Throne. Therefore, the water Belt, that carries the Throne, must also surround the other primordial creations like the Kursi and the Universe (2:255). There are four rivers that originate from the root of Sidratul Muntaha: two hidden for the Sayhan, Jahan, and two for the earth; the Nile and Euphrates, (and Tigris):
[On the night of Ma'raj) Jibril answered to the Prophet MuhammadSAW saying: "This is Sidratul-Muntaha, four rivers were emerging from the bottom of this tree: Two rivers were visible and two were invisible. The invisible rivers are the two rivers in the Paradise; the visible rivers are the Nile and Euphrates.] [Sahih Al-Bukhari, 3207, Book 59, hadith 18, Vol 4, Book 54, Hadith 429]
'Arsh in the Holy Qur'an:
The word 'Arsh (Throne) has been mentioned in the Holy Qur'an many times in the contexts of its lordship/ownership, and its magnificence [Ref: An Exhaustive Concordance of the Meaning of Qur'an]:
Lord of the Throne:
1. ""If they turn away, say (O MuhammadSAW) "Allah is sufficient for me. La Ilaha Illa Huwa, in Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne."" (At-Tawbah, 9:129)
2. "Allah, La Ilaha illa Huwa, the Lord of the Supreme Throne." (Al Naml, 27:26)
3. "So Exalted be Allah, the True King: La Ilaha Illa Huwa, the Lord of the Supreme Throne." (Al Mu'minun, 23:116)
4. "Had there been alihah (gods) with Allah, then they would seek out a way to the Lord of the Throne (seeking His Pleasure, and to be with Him)." (Al Isra, 17:42)
5. "Had there been therein (in the heavens and earth) alihah (gods), besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above all the (evil) they associate with Him." (Al Ambiya, 21:22)
6. "Glorified be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne! Exalted be He from all that they ascribe (to Him)." (Al Zukhruf, 43-82)
7. Say: "Who is (the) Lord of the seven heavens, and the Lord of the Great Throne." (Al Mu'minun, 23:86)
Owner of the Throne:
1. "The Owner of the Throne, Glorious." (Al Buruj, 85:15-16)
2. "(He is Allah), the Owner of the High Ranks, the Owner of the Throne." (Ghafir, 40:15)
3. "(Jibril) the owner of power, (and high rank), with (Allah); the Owner of the Throne." (Al Takwir, 81:20,)
The Throne and the Angels
-Angels surrounding the Throne, glorify Allah:
"And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne (of Allah) from all around, glorifying the praise of their lord…" (Az-Zumar, 39:75):
-Angels who bear the Throne, and those around it, glorify the praises of their Lord:
"Those (the angels) who bear the Throne (of Allah), and those around it, glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe…" (Ghafir, 40:7)
-Angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them:
"And the angels will be on its side, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of their Lord above them." (Al-Haqqah, 69:17):
In Summary:
1. The Throne (Al-'Arsh) is the First and Greatest Creation:
The Prophet Muhammad SAAW said, "First of all, there was nothing but Allah, and then He created His Throne. His Throne was over the water, and He wrote everything in the Book (with Him), and created the Heavens and the earth." (Bukhari)
2. Throne of Allah is on Water:
The Prophet Muhammad SAAW was asked, "Where was Allah, before He created the creation?' He said, "He was above the clouds, below which was air, and above which was air and water. Then He created His Throne above the water." (Sunan Ibn Majah)
3. Allah's Mercy is written over the Throne:
The Prophet Muhammad SAAW said: "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, "My Mercy subdues My Anger." (Bukhari)
4. Al-Firdaws (the Highest Paradise) is directly under the Throne of Allah:
The Messenger of Allah said: Paradise has one hundred grades, each of which is as big as the distance between heaven and earth. The highest of them is Firdaws and the best of them is Firdaws. The Throne is above Firdaws, and from it spring the rivers of Paradise. If you ask of Allah, ask Him for the Firdaws." (Sunan Ibn Majah)
5. Amazing size of the angels that carry the Throne: About the angels who carry the Throne, the Prophet Muhammad SAAW said that the distance between lobe of the ear of the angel to his shoulder, is journey of seven hundred years." (Sunan Abi Dawud)
6. No one but, Allah, the Only Ilah, is the Lord of the Throne
7. The Holy Qur'an denounces concept of polytheism and the concept of subsidiary gods (alihaa): Logically, as there cannot be an Ilah, except Allah, there cannot be an Owner or a Lord of the Throne except Allah because:
a) If there had been other gods (alihaa) with Him, they would certainly seek out a way to the Lord of the Throne, seeking His pleasure, and be near Hi, but tere is nothing like that near Him:
Say: "If there had been (other) god with Him — as they say – behold, certainly they would have sought out a way to the Lord of the Throne." (Al Isra', 17:42)
b) Had there been gods (alihah) in the heavens and earth, they would have ruined them (the heavens and the earth), because of mutual rivalry:
"Had there been therein (in the heavens and earth) alihah (gods), besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above all the (evil) they associate with Him." (Al Ambiya, 21:22)
